COUNTRY PRESENTATION

Livingstone, named after the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone, is the tourism capital of Zambia. Located just 10km from the world-famous, spectacular Victoria Falls and the starting point for a number of adrenaline activities and sightseeing adventures, Livingstone has earned its title as the adventure capital of Africa.

Briefly the capital of Northern Rhodesia, as Zambia was previously named, from 1911 to 1935, the town of Livingstone is quaint with a colonial feel. The main street is lined with classic Victorian buildings, the wooden verandas and tin roofed houses serving as classic examples of English settler architecture. Livingstone is relatively compact, so it is easy to navigate on foot. There are also a variety of activities in and around the town which will make a trip to this destination more than memorable.

When David Livingstone first glimpsed the majestic Falls in 1855, he claimed ìScenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flightî and named them after Queen Victoria. The force of the falling water produces high clouds of spray, which gave the falls their African name: Mosi-oa-Tunya - ìthe Smoke that Thundersî.

Livingstone and the Falls are also located close to the Botswana border, so a trip to famous Chobe National Park, just 80kms away, is also recommended. The area is famous for having the highest concentration of African elephant ñ 140,000. This can be enjoyed as an overnight stay or a full day safari activity from Victoria Falls.

With world class hotels, numerous adventure activities and the draw card of safari on your doorstep, Livingstone is a must see destination to visit in this beautiful part of Africa.

Although Zambia lies in the tropics and is therefore subject to humidity in certain areas, it is also located on a plateau, which ensures a fairly moderate climate overall. Zambia has three distinct seasons which will provide visitors with different perspectives of the country.

HOW TO GET THERE

Johannesburg in South Africa is the most effective gateway for all international arrivals in the region. There are daily scheduled flights from OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg, South Africa) to Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (Livingstone, Zambia) on airlines such as SAA & British Airways. There are now also direct flights from Nelspruit, Kruger. The flying time from Johannesburg is approximately 90 minutes.

Kenya Airways has introduced direct flights from Nairobi to Livingstone, with onward connections to Cape Town, making the region even more accessible. Guests can also fly into Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and make the 1.5hr road transfer across the border.
