COUNTRY PRESENTATION

Located about 1 500km east of mainland Africa, Seychelles, officially The Republic of Seychelles is a country made up of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, with Zanzibar to the west, Mauritius and Réunion to the south, and the Maldives to the northeast.

Seychelles is a comparatively young nation which can trace its first settlement back to 1770 when the islands were settled by the French. Today, The Republic of Seychelles has a multi-party political system with an executive President as head of state and government.

Seychelles sets the standard for sustainable ecotourism and is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites brimming with rare flora and fauna. The beaches are what made the destination famous, but art, shopping and sporting activities are all close at hand.

Mahé is the largest island of the Seychelles archipelago, and home to about 80 000 people and the capital city, Victoria. Its mountainous interior is largely covered with dense cloud forest, while the coastline has beautiful, white powdered beaches, lovely coves and great beach retreats. Mahé also has a vibrant art scene; many artists have settled in the Seychelles over the years, inspired by the island’s tropical landscape.

Victoria, one of the world’s smallest capitals, is sandwiched between soaring granite mountains and a busy maritime harbour. It’s a quaint city with neat, tree-lined streets, a colourful local market, souvenir stores and a number of bars and restaurants.

Some 45 minutes by fast catamaran ferry from Mahé lies Praslin, the second largest of the Seychelles islands. This island has much to offer; from stunning palm-fringed beaches to the restaurants and shops at Côte d’Or, and the world’s smallest UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vallée de Mai.

La Digue Island is hard to beat for laid-back, beach-side holidays. Its traditional Creole community enjoys a particularly unhurried way of life, using colourful oxcarts as means of transport. Here, activities revolve around simple pleasures, including bicycle excursions and beachcombing at one of the Seychelles’ many striking beaches.

WHEN TO VISIT

Seychelles is hot and humid, with an average year round temperature of 84°F (29°C), and an average sea temperature rarely dropping below 81°F (27°C). However, the heat is usually mitigated by refreshing sea breezes, especially at the beaches. The cooler season in Seychelles is during May to September and the warmer season is November to March. Conditions for swimming, snorkelling and especially diving are superb during April/May and October/November when the water temperature sometimes reaches 29ºC and visibility is often 30 metres plus.

HOW TO GET THERE

The only international gateway to the Seychelles is Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) near the capital, Victoria. Air Seychelles is the national carrier. International services are also available from BA, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Emirates, Etihad, South African Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways. There are regular charter services from Frankfurt on Condor.

Air Seychelles operates multiple daily flights between Mahé and Praslin. Over two dozen flights vary in frequency from 15 minute to 2-hour intervals, depending on the time of day. On Mahé the flights depart from the domestic terminal located alongside the international terminal.

The small airport on Praslin is up-to-date and comfortable. Mahé and Praslin are also connected by modern catamaran. Praslin and La Digue islands are linked by ferries, which take about 30 minutes.

Air Seychelles operates once daily or several times per week between Mahé and the islands of Bird, Denis, Fregate, Desroches and Alphonse. Assumption and Coëtivy Islands can be reached by air charter.
