GREEN ROUTE AFRICA

Green Route Africa, originating in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, is one of the pioneering DMC's operating in Southern & East Africa. Their main business is incoming tourism from all over the world in the form of individual travellers, groups, meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions.

They operate across 12 countries - South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Seychelles, Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.

Their expert team is not only highly skilled, with a wealth of knowledge and expertise, but has an insatiable passion for African travel.

Through their sister company, Dragonfly Africa, they are also able to offer a separate leisure travel department for the discerning individual traveller.

COUNTRY PRESENTATION

Tanzania is East Africa’s largest country, bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south.

A land of geographical extremes, Tanzania comprises the highest peak in Africa (Mount Kilimanjaro), the lowest point (the lake bed of Lake Tanganyika), and a portion of the largest lake (Lake Victoria, shared with Uganda and Kenya) on the African continent.

Tanzania is home to several national parks and game reserves where you can see some of the finest African flora and fauna. Safaris in Tanzania can be put into two categories, the Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara and Tarangire) and the Southern Circuit (Selous, Mikumi and Ruaha). This is certainly an oversimplification and does not include other interesting but harder to reach parks such as Katavi and Gombe, just to name two.

Sun-filled and beautiful days are not all that Tanzania has to offer. On the contrary, the country’s borders hold a vast number of people and tribes whose varied cultures and traditions make up the rich tapestry that is Tanzania.

WHEN TO VISIT

Tanzania’s weather varies from humid and hot in low lying areas, such as Dar es Salaam, to hot during the day and cool at night in Arusha.

There are no discernible seasons, such as winter and summer - only the dry and wet seasons.

Tanzania has two rainy seasons: The short rains from late-October to late-December, known as the Mango Rains, and the long rains from March to May.

June to August: This is the tail-end of the long rainy season and the weather is at its best at this time of year - bearable during the day and cool in the evening. However, this is not necessarily the best time of year for safaris, as water is plentiful in the parks and animals are not forced to congregate in a few locations to rehydrate, as they do in the middle of the dry season right after Christmas.

November to February: This is the best time to visit the Serengeti. It is usually at this time that huge herds of Wildebeest, Zebra and Buffalo migrate to better grazing areas. At this period you could observe some of the 1.5 million Wildebeest that inhabit the Serengeti undertake their epic journey. Be advised though that this is most likely the hottest time of year in Tanzania. The wildebeest and zebra usually have their young in February and March, which is always a thrill to witness.

HOW TO GET THERE

These days there are many ways to travel to Tanzania. Overland railways connect the country, the roads are easy to navigate and well-maintained, cruise ships and passenger liners stop frequently at the ports, and international air carriers arrive and depart daily from the many airports located around the country.

The largest International hub is at Dar es Salaam (Julius Nyerere International Airport), however, Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) serves the Kilimanjaro area including the cities of Arusha and Moshi near Mount Kilimanjaro. The airport is the gateway to Africa’s wildlife heritage in particular Mount Kilimanjaro, Arusha National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park. Currently, international airlines that fly to Dar es Salaam include Rwanda Air, Qatar Airlines, Etihad, Kenya Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Egypt Air, KLM, Swiss Airlines, Fast Jet and South African Airways. Other international air carriers fly to Nairobi, where there are daily connections to Arusha and Dar es Salaam. KLM, Qatar, Rwanda Air and Ethiopian Airways fly direct to Kilimanjaro International Airport for best access to the safari route. Arusha Municipal Airport is located 1 hours drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport and is used as a hub for both scheduled and charter flights into the Serengeti and other domestic regions.
